Educational details

Educational value
  • This asset marks the 1913 visit of the Australian cricket team to the USA - Australian cricket teams began visiting the USA on their way home from English tours in the 1880s, but attempts to wean Americans away from their favourite summer sport, baseball, were not successful.
  • It marks an event that may have been a response to the visit of two leading US baseball teams, the Giants and the White Sox, to Australia in January 1913 when they played exhibition games in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne - they were well received but corresponding attempts to wean Australians away from their favourite summer sport of cricket were unsuccessful.
  • It provides an example of printed design in the Art Nouveau style - Art Nouveau began in Europe and the USA in the late 19th century and was marked by repeated motifs of elongated movement and connected curved lines.
